What's the difference between RER and MER for dogs?

RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the baseline energy a dog needs at complete rest — no activity, no growth, no pregnancy. Calculated as 70 × weight(kg)^0.75, it's the minimum energy for vital functions like breathing, circulation, and body temperature regulation. MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) adjusts RER for real life: MER = RER × activity factor. A neutered adult dog's activity factor is 1.6; an active puppy's is 3.0. MER is the number you actually use to determine daily food portions. Our calculator shows both values so you understand the full picture.

How many calories should I feed my puppy?

Puppies have much higher energy requirements than adult dogs. A puppy under 4 months needs approximately 3× their RER — that's nearly double an adult dog's calorie needs per kg of body weight. From 4 months to adulthood, the multiplier drops to 2× RER. Because puppies are growing rapidly, they need frequent meals (3-4 per day until 6 months) and calorie-dense nutrition. Our calculator adjusts for your puppy's age to give a calorie target appropriate for their growth stage. Always monitor body condition and adjust — the calculator provides a starting point, not an absolute rule.

Should I feed my dog before or after a walk?

Veterinarians recommend feeding your dog after a walk, not before — and waiting at least 30-60 minutes after exercise before feeding. The primary reason is bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus or GDV) prevention: exercising on a full stomach increases the risk of life-threatening stomach twisting, especially in large, deep-chested breeds (Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, Boxers). Bloat has a mortality rate of 10-30% even with emergency surgery. Other reasons to feed after: dogs digest better when resting (blood flow stays with digestion rather than muscles), post-exercise feeding helps with training reinforcement, and a post-walk meal signals relaxation. If you must feed before exercise, wait at least 2 hours, or feed half the portion 2+ hours before and the rest after. Smaller dogs have lower GDV risk but the same digestion principles apply.

Why is my dog always hungry?

Dogs have a strong evolutionary drive to eat whenever food is available — their wild ancestors didn't know when the next meal would come. Common reasons for excessive hunger include: the food lacks sufficient protein or fiber (dogs feel fuller on high-protein, high-fiber diets); feeding too little for their activity level (try our calorie calculator for an accurate target); medical conditions like diabetes, Cushing's disease, hyperthyroidism, or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) — these cause real physiological hunger; intestinal parasites that steal nutrients; boredom or anxiety that manifests as food-seeking behavior; and certain medications like prednisone that increase appetite. If your dog is eating the right amount but constantly begging, try splitting meals into 2-3 smaller portions, adding low-calorie vegetables (green beans, carrots) as fillers, using slow-feeder bowls, and increasing exercise. If you've ruled out underfeeding and your dog is losing weight despite eating normally, see a vet — this is a red flag for metabolic disease.
